What is a WhatsApp QR Code?

A WhatsApp QR code holds a click-to-chat link (wa.me) with your phone number. When someone scans it, WhatsApp opens a chat with you, so they can message you without typing or saving your number.

The link can carry a pre-filled message. It appears in the chat box when the chat opens, ready for the person to edit or send. That saves them wondering what to write, and tells you what they want before you reply.

A static WhatsApp code holds the link itself and doesn't depend on our servers. A dynamic code points to a short link we redirect, so you can change the number or message after printing and see how many people scan it, from which countries and devices.

Why You Need a WhatsApp QR Code

1

Remove the Friction From Getting in Touch

A phone number on a sign asks people to type it in, save it, find you in WhatsApp, and only then write. Each step loses someone.

A WhatsApp QR code skips all of that. The camera reads the code, and one tap opens a chat with you in WhatsApp.

2

Get Messages You Can Answer When You're Free

A call has to be answered now. A chat waits until you finish with the customer in front of you.

The customer gets a written record of your reply, and you get one of their question, which makes orders, bookings, and quotes easier to keep straight.

3

Know Why They're Writing

A pre-filled message tells you where the person found you and what they want, before they've typed a word: 'Hi, I'm interested in the two-bedroom on Oak Street.'

Use a different message on each sign or product and you'll know which one started the chat.

4

Print Once, Keep It Current

Numbers change: a new support line, a different person on duty, a seasonal shop. With a static code, every printed flyer would need replacing.

A dynamic code points to a short link you control. Change the number or the message in your dashboard and every code you've printed follows.

5

Measure Which Materials Work

A dynamic code counts every scan, with the country, device, and time. Put a separate code on each flyer or location and you can compare them.

Then spend your print budget on what starts conversations, not on what looks good on the design file.

Advantages of WhatsApp QR Codes

No Number to Type

People don't copy your number into their phone or save you as a contact. One scan opens the chat.

The First Message Is Written for Them

A pre-filled message gets the conversation going and tells you why they're writing: an order, a booking, a question about a listing.

Works on Anything You Print

Signs, menus, packaging, receipts, business cards. Anywhere you'd print a phone number, a code gets people talking to you faster.

Change Your Number Later (Dynamic)

If your number or message changes, update a dynamic code in your dashboard. Everything you already printed keeps working.

See What Gets Scanned (Dynamic)

Scan counts by country, device, and time show which flyers and locations actually start conversations.

How to Create a WhatsApp QR Code

1

Enter your number

Type your WhatsApp number with its country code, the way you'd write it for someone abroad, for example +44 7700 900123.

2

Add a first message (optional)

Write the line people will send you, such as 'Hi, I saw your sign and have a question.' They can change it before sending.

3

Customize the design

Pick colors and a dot style, or add your logo. Keep dark dots on a light background so every phone camera can read it.

4

Download your code

Create a free account to download it. With scan tracking on, the code is dynamic and saved to your dashboard, where you can edit it and get SVG or PDF files for print.

5

Test before printing

Scan the code with your own phone and check that the chat opens with the right number and message.

Best Practices for WhatsApp QR Codes

1

Always Include the Country Code

WhatsApp's click-to-chat link needs the full international number, country code included. A number written only the local way opens a chat with the wrong number or none at all.

Write it as you would for someone abroad, then scan the finished code to confirm the chat opens with you.

2

Say What Happens When They Scan

Print a short line next to the code: 'Scan to message us on WhatsApp.' People scan more when they know where the code goes.

Add what's in it for them: 'for today's prices' or 'to book a viewing'.

3

Write a Useful First Message

Keep it short and specific. 'Hi, I'd like a quote for a bathroom repair' gives you context and gives the customer an easy start.

Include the product, location, or listing when one code belongs to one of them, so you know what they're asking about.

4

Tell People When You Reply

A chat creates an expectation of a quick answer. If you can't reply within the hour, say when you will, on the sign itself.

'We reply between 9 and 6' is better than a customer wondering whether the message arrived.

5

Test Before You Print

Scan the code with an iPhone and an Android phone before you print a batch. Check the number, the message, and that the right chat opens.

Test the size too: a code on a window or a van needs to be bigger than one on a business card.

Popular Use Cases

Shops & Local Services

Put the code on the door, the counter, or a flyer so customers can ask about stock, prices, or opening hours without calling.

Restaurants & Delivery

Print it on menus and take-out bags. Customers send an order or a booking straight to your WhatsApp.

Real Estate & Rentals

Add it to listing signs and brochures. A buyer standing outside the property can ask a question while they're still interested.

Support & After-Sales

Put it in manuals, on packaging, or on invoices so customers reach your support chat instead of a phone queue.

WhatsApp QR Codes by Context

For Shops & Local Services

Shop Window

People passing after hours scan to ask about stock or prices, and you answer when you open.

Counter and Receipts

A code at checkout gives customers a way to reach you later about returns, orders, or offers.

Vans and Flyers

Plumbers, cleaners, and tutors put a code on the van or flyer so new customers message for a quote.

For Restaurants & Delivery

Tables and Menus

Guests message a booking for next time or ask a question without waiting for staff.

Take-Out Bags

A code on the bag sends the next order straight to your WhatsApp.

Catering Flyers

Party and catering requests arrive in the chat, with a pre-filled message that asks for the date and number of guests.

For Real Estate & Rentals

Listing Signs

Buyers outside a property ask for a viewing on the spot, with the address already in the message.

Brochures and Open Houses

Visitors message you with follow-up questions after they've left.

Rental Units

Tenants scan a code by the door to reach the landlord or the maintenance contact.

For Support & After-Sales

Product Packaging

Customers reach your support chat from the box, with the product name already in the message.

Manuals and Warranty Cards

Setup questions go to a chat instead of a phone line.

Invoices

A code on the invoice opens a chat for payment and delivery questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I enter my phone number?

Use the full international format: your country code, then your number as someone abroad would dial it. In most countries that means dropping the 0 you dial at home: the UK mobile 07700 900123 becomes +44 7700 900123. Where the 0 is dialed from abroad as well, keep it: for example, Italian landlines (+39 06 …) and numbers in Côte d'Ivoire (+225 07 …), Benin, Burkina Faso, and the Republic of the Congo. The generator removes spaces, brackets, dashes, and a 00 prefix for you.

Does the pre-filled message send automatically?

No. The message appears in the chat box and the person taps send. They can edit it first, so write it as a starting point, like 'Hi, I'd like to book a table for Friday.'

Do people need to save my number first?

No. That's what WhatsApp's click-to-chat link is for: it opens a chat with your number without adding you to their contacts. They need WhatsApp to message you, and your number needs an active WhatsApp account.

Can I use a WhatsApp Business number?

Yes. Click-to-chat links work with any number that has an active WhatsApp account, including numbers on the WhatsApp Business app.

How is this different from WhatsApp's own QR code?

WhatsApp's own code, under Settings next to your name, shares your contact so people can add you. A click-to-chat code made here opens a chat with you directly, can type a first message for them, and, as a dynamic code, lets you change the number later and count scans.

Can I change the number after printing?

With a dynamic QR code, yes: edit the number or message in your dashboard and the printed code follows. A static code has the link built into its pattern, so a new number means a new code.
