Which QR Code Generator is Best? Free & Paid Options Compared [2026]

Compare the best QR code generators for 2026. See which tools are actually free, which offer the best features, and how to choose the right one for your needs.

The best QR code generator depends on one question: will you ever need to change where the code points after you print it? If no, almost any free tool works. If yes, you're buying dynamic codes, and the tools differ a lot in price, billing terms and what happens when you stop paying.

I re-checked every price and limit in this guide against the vendors' own pricing pages on September 18, 2026. Where a vendor hides a number behind a sales form, I say so instead of guessing.

What Changed in 2026

Beaconstac is now Uniqode (the rebrand happened in January 2024, and beaconstac.com redirects). Uniqode sells dynamic codes from $9/mo, but every paid tier is billed annually; its own pricing page says "We currently only offer annual subscription plans." QR Tiger's Regular tier ($7/mo) has a monthly option; its Advanced ($16/mo) and Premium ($37/mo) tiers are billed annually only. Flowcode's free plan is still 2 codes and 500 scans. Bitly runs two products. Its link plans at bitly.com bundle QR codes: 2 per month free, 5 on Core ($10/mo, annual only), 10 on Growth ($29/mo annual or $35 monthly). Its standalone QR Code Generator (QRCG, qr-code-generator.com) has no free plan: Starter $9.99/mo for 2 dynamic codes (monthly or annual), Advanced $18.99/mo for 50 (annual only), Professional $49.99/mo for 250 (annual only), each after a 14-day trial. QR Code Maker is unchanged: Starter $9/mo for 50 dynamic codes, Pro $29/mo for 500, both on monthly billing, and your oldest dynamic code keeps working if you downgrade to free.

Which QR Code Generator Is Best for a Small Business in 2026?

For a small business that needs a handful of editable codes, the two closest options are QR Code Maker Starter ($9/mo, 50 dynamic codes, 50,000 scans a month, monthly billing) and QR Tiger Regular ($7/mo, 12 dynamic codes, monthly billing). Above that, QR Code Maker Pro ($29/mo, 500 codes, no scan cap) and QR Tiger Advanced ($16/mo billed annually, 200 codes) are the direct comparison, and only one of them bills monthly.

Uniqode and Flowcode both want a year up front on the tiers a small business actually needs. If you've never been burned by an annual prepayment, Uniqode at $9/mo billed yearly is fine. If you have, monthly billing is the deciding factor: at this price QRCG's Starter (2 codes) and QR Tiger's Regular (12 codes) bill monthly, and above a dozen codes only QR Code Maker does.

What Makes a QR Code Generator Good?

Must-Haves

  • Produces codes that scan (correct encoding, real error correction)
  • Doesn't inject its own redirect or branding into your code
  • Says plainly what's free and what isn't
  • Serves everything over HTTPS

Nice-To-Haves

  • More than URL codes (WiFi, vCard, email, PDF)
  • Colors, logos and shape options
  • Dynamic codes with editing and analytics
  • SVG download for print
  • Monthly billing

Red Flags

  • A credit card to use "free" features
  • Scan limits or expiry dates on free codes
  • Pricing you can't find without talking to sales
  • Its logo or a tracking redirect added to your code without asking

Best Free QR Code Generators

For static codes, meaning the destination is baked into the pattern and can't change, these three are free without a catch.

1. QR Code Maker (Our Pick)

Best for: starting free with a real upgrade path

  • Unlimited static codes, no expiry, no scan cap
  • URL, WiFi, vCard, email, phone, text and PDF codes
  • SVG download for print
  • One free dynamic code with 1,000 scans a month, so you can try tracking before paying
  • No card required

Limitation: more than one dynamic code, or more analytics, needs a paid plan.

2. QR Code Monkey

Best for: free codes with the most design options

  • Unlimited free static codes, "100% free" for commercial use
  • Strong customization: body shapes, eye shapes, logos, gradients
  • High-resolution PNG, SVG, PDF, EPS
  • Been around for years

Limitation: it doesn't run its own dynamic-code service. The dynamic option hands you to QR Code Generator PRO at qr-code-generator.com, Bitly's separate QRCG product, which has no free plan, only a 14-day trial. The interface also hasn't changed much in years.

3. GoQR.me

Best for: a code in ten seconds with nothing else

  • No signup, no account
  • PNG, SVG, EPS output
  • Free static codes

Limitation: minimal styling, no dynamic codes.

4. Canva (QR Code App)

Best for: people already laying out a flyer in Canva

  • Lives inside the Canva editor
  • Free for all Canva users
  • Drop straight into the design you're working on

Limitation: URL codes only. Canva's newer dynamic tool can edit the destination, but on Free and Pro it puts a Canva logo in the code, and scan tracking needs a Business plan.

Best Paid QR Code Generators

Once you need to edit a printed code or see who's scanning it, you're paying. Here's how the paid tiers compare.

1. QR Code Maker Pro

Best for: a growing business that wants monthly billing and no scan cap

  • Dynamic codes you can re-point any time
  • Scan analytics: time, location, device
  • Bulk generation on Pro and up; team seats; API access coming
  • Restaurant menu builder
  • Starter $9/mo (50 codes), Pro $29/mo (500 codes), monthly or annual

Yes, this is us. We built it after getting tired of expiring "free" codes and pricing pages that needed a sales call. The pricing page has every number on it.

2. Uniqode (Formerly Beaconstac)

Best for: larger teams that want integrations and don't mind paying a year up front

  • Deep analytics, retargeting, geofencing
  • Zapier and CRM integrations
  • Starter $9/mo and Core $49/mo, both billed annually; a 14-day trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee
  • Custom domain is a $2,000/year add-on on the Plus tier

Limitation: no monthly plan on any tier, and per-tier code and scan limits weren't visible on the pricing page when I checked; third-party reviews list them, and disagree with each other.

3. QR Tiger

Best for: mid-range needs on a small budget

  • Regular $7/mo, monthly or annual: 12 dynamic codes, unlimited scans
  • Advanced $16/mo, billed annually: 200 codes, bulk generation
  • Premium $37/mo, billed annually: 600 codes, white label

Limitation: the free plan's dynamic codes are capped at 500 scans each, and everything above Regular is annual-only.

4. Bitly (and QRCG)

Best for: teams already paying for Bitly links

  • QR codes come with the link plans: 2/month free, 5 on Core ($10/mo, annual only), 10 on Growth ($29/mo annual, $35 monthly)
  • Established platform with good link analytics

Limitation: it's a link shortener first: link-based codes only, and the per-month code allowance runs out fast if you print a lot. Bitly's separate QR Code Generator (QRCG) is the fuller QR product, but it has no free tier and its 50-code tier is annual-only.

Best QR Code Generator by Industry

Restaurants and Food Service

Menus change: prices, specials, the dish that sold out at 8pm. You need dynamic codes so the table tents survive the changes, and ideally a menu builder so you're not uploading PDFs. Best choices: QR Code Maker (menu builder included), Uniqode (restaurant templates).

Real Estate

Listings sell. A dynamic code on a yard sign can be re-pointed to the next property, and per-code analytics tell you which flyer or sign actually got scanned. Best choices: QR Code Maker, QR Tiger (both give per-code scan data).

Marketing and Advertising

You're measuring ROI, so you want UTM support, Google Analytics integration, and scan data by time, location and device. Bulk generation matters for multi-location campaigns. Best choices: Uniqode (enterprise analytics), QR Code Maker (scan data by time, location and device; UTM-friendly links; bulk).

Events and Hospitality

Hundreds of unique codes for tickets, and check-ins that don't make the line move slower. Best choices: Uniqode (event features), QR Tiger (bulk generation). For the full playbook, see QR codes for events.

Retail and Product Packaging

Print-ready SVG, brand colors that still scan, and usually static codes, since a product page rarely moves. Best choices: QR Code Maker (SVG downloads), QR Code Monkey (design flexibility).

Healthcare and Government

You need a vendor that will sign a BAA, publish its data practices, and guarantee uptime. Uniqode's Business+ tier advertises HIPAA and SOC 2 Type 2; the price is quote-only. Skip free generators here entirely: you can't audit what they do with scan data.

Features Worth Paying For (and Marketing Fluff)

Worth Paying For

  • Dynamic code editing: re-point a printed code without reprinting. Essential for signage.
  • Scan analytics: when, where and how often your codes get scanned.
  • SVG export: stays sharp at any print size.
  • More code types: WiFi, vCard and email codes save the person scanning a step.
  • API access: generate codes from your own system for labels, tickets or automations.

Marketing Fluff

  • "AI-powered" generation: a QR code is an encoding standard. There's nothing for AI to improve.
  • "Unlimited colors": every generator does custom colors.
  • "Advanced security": the code itself has no security. What matters is the page it opens.
  • "Premium support": for a tool this simple, email support is enough.

Easy to Overlook

  • Error correction level: decides how much logo you can put over the pattern.
  • Quiet zone: some generators skip the margin, and the code stops scanning on a busy background.
  • Redirect speed: a slow redirect on a dynamic code feels like a broken code.
  • What happens when you cancel: if the provider's redirect goes dark, every printed dynamic code dies with it.

Ask before you commit

Ask any dynamic-code provider two things: can I export my codes and destinations, and what happens to my printed codes if I cancel? If the answer to either is vague, your printed materials are hostage to the subscription.

How to Choose the Right Generator

Use a Free Tool When

  • The destination will never change
  • You don't need to know how many people scanned
  • You're making a few codes, not a campaign

Pay When

  • You need to edit the link after printing
  • You want scan data
  • You need WiFi, vCard or menu codes with tracking
  • You're generating codes in bulk

Five Questions Before Choosing

  1. Will the destination change after printing? Yes → dynamic, paid. No → static, free.
  2. Do I need analytics? Yes → dynamic, paid. No → static, free.
  3. Which code types? Just URLs → anything works. WiFi, vCard, PDF → check the tool supports them.
  4. How much styling? Colors and a logo → most free tools. Full pattern control → QR Code Monkey or a paid tier.
  5. How many codes? A few → anything. Hundreds → check bulk features and the per-code price at that volume.

Switching QR Code Generators: What to Know

Static codes aren't tied to any service. The data is in the pattern, so they keep working after you leave, and there's nothing to migrate.

Dynamic codes redirect through the old provider's servers. Your printed codes still point there, you can't move them without reprinting, and if you cancel, the redirects may stop. Some providers let you use your own domain for redirects, which is the one thing that makes a later switch painless. Ask about it before you commit.

What to Check Before Committing

  • Export: can you download every code with its destination?
  • Custom domain: can the redirect run on a domain you own?
  • Cancellation: what happens to live codes when you stop paying?
  • Analytics export: can you take the scan data with you?

Is Free Really Free?

Free generators make money somehow. The honest models: freemium (static free, dynamic paid), ads on the generator site, or asking for your email. Your codes stay clean in all three.

The models that cost you later:

  • The 14-day "free" code. The code works during the trial, then stops. You've already printed it. QRCG and Uniqode both run trials rather than free tiers for dynamic codes, which is fine as long as you know it going in.
  • The scan cap. "Free with 500 scans" means the flyer works for the first 500 people. QR Tiger and Flowcode both cap free scans.
  • The hidden redirect. Some free tools route your code through their own tracking URL or add their logo. Scan your own code before you print 5,000 of anything.
  • The expiring static code. A static code has the data in the pattern. If a generator "expires" one, it did that on purpose to push you to pay.

Picture 5,000 flyers going out with a code that dies on day 31. The reprint costs more than a year of any plan in this article.

Where we stand: static codes are free because they cost us nothing to keep alive; the data is in the image. Dynamic codes cost money because we run the redirect and the analytics for as long as you're printing them. Those are the only two prices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which QR code generator is actually free?

QR Code Maker, QR Code Monkey and GoQR.me all give you static QR codes free, with no expiry and no scan cap. Be careful with any tool that calls a 14-day trial "free," asks for a card, or caps scans on the free tier.

Which QR code generator is safe and free?

QR Code Maker and QR Code Monkey are both reputable. A safe generator serves over HTTPS, publishes a privacy policy, and doesn't add its own redirect or branding to your code. Scan the code you download and confirm it opens your URL directly.

Where should I generate QR codes?

For one URL code, any reputable free generator. For business use, pick a tool with dynamic codes, scan analytics, and pricing you can read without a sales call, and check what happens to your codes if you cancel.

Is QR Code Maker better than QR Code Monkey?

For static codes they're close; QR Code Monkey has more pattern styling. For anything editable or tracked, QR Code Maker has its own dynamic codes from $9/mo on monthly billing, while QR Code Monkey sends you to QRCG, which has no free plan.

What QR code generator doesn't expire?

Static codes from any reputable generator never expire; the data is in the pattern. Dynamic codes last as long as the subscription behind them, so pick a provider that publishes its cancellation terms. On QR Code Maker, your oldest dynamic code keeps working on the free plan after a downgrade.

Do I need to pay for a QR code generator?

Only if you need to edit the destination after printing, see scan data, or generate in bulk. A permanent link on a poster is a free static code.

The Bottom Line

Start with a free static code. Upgrade the day you need to change a printed link or see who scanned it, and pick a provider by its billing terms and cancellation policy, not its feature list. The cost of dynamic codes is small next to a reprint.
